On Sunday morning, climate activists caused a commotion at the Red Bull Ring when they stormed the circuit before the Formula 3 race. They were arrested a short time later. “With such actions, these so-called activists are taking tens of thousands of motorsport fans hostage,” complained Styrian Governor Christopher Drexler.
This is how it happened on the last day of the Grand Prix weekend in the Murtal: the climate activists made an appearance, which many expected (or rather feared). Before the start of the Formula 3 race, two men and a woman, who according to the police were already involved in the disruption at the Erzbergrodeo, entered the track.
“They apparently ended up in the western, wooded part of the route. Only in turn three could they be stopped by the security forces in the gravel trap,” reports police spokesman Heimo Kohlbacher. According to reports, the activists did not want to tie themselves up there, but rather chained them along the route. It is hard to imagine what could have happened if the Formula 3 race had already started.
Activists are not cooperating
The trio was subsequently arrested and questioned at Knittelfeld police station. According to the executive, the activists were not particularly cooperative. They now face multiple criminal charges, for example for obtaining a service by fraud because they were on the Ring area without a ticket, and a charge of property damage is also being considered.
“For me they are not activists”
After the Daffodil Festival and the Erzbergrodeo, the climate activists now chose the largest possible stage in Styria to draw attention to their concerns. Styrian Governor Christopher Drexler showed little understanding for this in an interview with the “Krone”: “For me, these people are not activists, they are threats! They are taking tens of thousands of peaceful motorsport fans hostage and thereby damaging the climate – namely that of our society.”
Moreover, such actions also endanger drivers and security forces – “and ultimately our collective efforts to protect the climate.”
