It is not unusual for the Federal President to enjoy a live sporting event. But Alexander Van der Bellen now has a special greeting for “our boys” at the European Football Championship.
The office of the Federal President sent the ‘Krone’ a snapshot of Alexander Van der Bellen: with red-white-red scarf, shirt without jacket and tie, in the middle of the reception area of the presidential office. This sight is rare…
Van der Bellen also greets the ÖFB team with hope, who, as is known, will face Turkey in the round of 16 of the European Football Championship tonight (live on krone.at from 9 p.m.).
Van der Bellen on the “Krone”: “I have of course followed the previous matches with great excitement and I have to say: that was already an incredible achievement! Group victory – sensational! In every European Championship there is that one team that not only fulfils the hopes and dreams of the fans, but even exceeds them. It could very well be that our boys are that team. I wish our national team that they will go into the next matches with the same fighting spirit.”
The president, who last week sent his best wishes to team boss Ralf Rangnick via text message, probably speaks from the hearts of many people. The Austrians have performed brilliantly in the tournament so far and have already met and even exceeded many expectations by reaching the round of 16 – but is there really more?
Some observers already see “our boys” as the secret favourites for the title – including Turkish captain Hakan Calhanoglu himself (“very strong, my secret favourite”).
After all: according to the data analysis website “Opta” the chance that Austria would actually win the title was recently 3.64 percent and that of a victory against Turkey 49.3 percent. Tonight we will know more!
