Hiking, swimming etc. – Where Austrian politicians spend their holidays

Date:

Austrian politicians have modest vacation plans for this summer: many stay in their own country, others go to Croatia or Italy. Often there is only talk of a “few quiet days”.

Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen travels with his wife and dog to the Tyrolean Kaunertal, where he grew up, and to a lake in the Salzkammergut. Minister of Agriculture Norbert Totschnig (ÖVP) also feels drawn to Tyrol, who takes his children to his parents’ farm and wants to make trips to the mountains, among other things.

Hiking is also on the agenda for FPÖ chairman Herbert Kickl, Minister of Justice Alma Zadic and State Secretary for Youth Claudia Plakolm (ÖVP). “When exactly, which region, which tours or how long is still open,” says Kickl. That depends on the weather and the plans of his friends. “Hopefully it will work with one or two mountains, last year it was the Glockner,” says Plakolm. Zadic also wants to travel to the Adriatic Sea.

Almost every state is represented
Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) is once again counting on “relaxing days in Carinthia”. The programme includes time in nature and reading. State Secretary for Tourism Susanne Kraus-Winkler is planning a holiday to southern Styria and Tuscany, and Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) and his family and NEOS boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger are also going to Styria.

As every year, SPÖ leader Andreas Babler travels to Vorarlberg to visit his wife’s family. The politician said that there might also be a few days in Italy. Lower Austria is again the destination of Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP), who is spending the holidays with her husband and daughter.

Those who are attracted to the sea
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖPV) plans to spend a few days in Switzerland and “a day or two at home”. Economics Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP) plans “a few active days” with his wife, for example sports activities. Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) wants to play tennis with his ‘boys’. “Maybe spend a few days with the family at the seaside.”

Family Minister Susanne Raab, Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg and Chancellor Karl Nehammer (all ÖVP) have also gone there. Raab is going to Croatia with his husband and son for a week; a location for Schallenberg is still open. “With four children, it is not so easy to reconcile different interests,” the politician noted. Nehammer will be at the seaside with his family for a few days, but will mainly campaign in all federal states.

Kogler travels by train
Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens) is travelling for a few days through Italy and France – in line with his party’s demands. Constitutional Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) has also chosen France as her destination. We are also going to Croatia with our dog Struppi.
