Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected in Salzach: the Brexit supporter is the main speaker at the Salzburg Summit congress of the Austrian People’s Association, which is close to the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP). There is also criticism from the political opposition.
Boris Johnson is coming to Salzburg at the end of July. He will be heading the list of speakers at this year’s Salzburg Summit. The conference of the industry association is seen as a platform for exchange on the future of Europe as a business location. The focus of the discussion is on technological, economic and socio-political aspects as well as the geopolitical dimension. The motto of the fifth edition is to think further and exploit Europe’s potential.
The former British prime minister, whose term was marked by Brexit chaos, is a member of Ukraine’s international task force on security and Euro-Atlantic integration. Among other speakers, European Investment Bank President Nadia Calviño, EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn and several ÖVP ministers are expected.
Is Johnson the right one?
There are generally critical voices from the political opposition. Sabine Klausner, SPÖ member of the state parliament, is surprised: “Boris Johnson is a proven Brexit hardliner.” She wonders why he is appearing.
