The TyrVP Governor of Tyrol, Günther Platter, announced his retirement from politics on Monday. Federal party leader and chancellor Karl Nehammer paid tribute to his party colleague, thanked him for his work and wished him all the best for the future. Opposition parties, on the other hand, saw Platter’s withdrawal as an escape from impending defeat in the upcoming state elections.
For Platter, the state of Tyrol has always had the highest priority, emphasizes Chancellor Nehammer. The Tyrolean population therefore placed great confidence in him. During his long tenure as governor of the state and chairman of the state party, he has “shaped Tyrol in the most positive sense”, said Nehammer: “He deserves the utmost respect and thanks for all his achievements.”
His successor, Secretary of the Economy Anton Mattle, has “all the skills to be successful as a state governor and state party chairman”. Thanks also came from Deputy Secretary-General Laura Sachslehner. Platter “earned his political retirement”. Sachslehner also praised Mattle’s successor as a “skilled and accomplished politician”.
First reactions from the opposition
For SPÖ deputy club boss Jörg Leichtfried, on the other hand, Platter’s withdrawal shows that confidence in the federal government is also declining within the ÖVP – the provincial governors fear electoral defeats. NEOS deputy club boss Gerald Loacker showed understanding that at the end of his political career, Platter no longer wanted to lose in the election. NEOS did not want to condemn the successor Anton Mattle.
For FPÖ faction leader Christian Hafenecker, Platter “flights ahead”.
