The Minister of Housing and Urban Agenda, Denis Itxasoannounced on Wednesday that the Basque Government will purchase houses on the open market with a view to later allocating them for social housing, among other measures to address the problem of homelessness.
In an interview in Euskadi Irratia, Itxaso indicated that the Basque government will enter the housing market. He also stated that the Ministry of Housing provides to build During this legislature, 7,000 social housing units are available for rent. Without giving more details, he assured that there are many ways to achieve that goal. According to him, direct purchase is one option, but he also mentioned the possibility that the Basque government could buy the houses that the developers do not sell. In any case, Itxaso stressed that the housing problem is “a very complex phenomenon” and that the government cannot tackle it individually. As he said: “if we want to bring 7,000 new homes to the market, the initiative of the Basque Government will not be enough.”
