Alderman for Economic Affairs Peter Hanke on the large chunks in the budget, public transport construction sites, the Lobautunnel, concerns about young unemployed people and major film projects in the city.
“Vienna’s budget of 20 billion euros this year is not for the faint-hearted,” says Gerhard Koller of krone-tv, as he opens a new episode of “Nachgefragt Spezial” with city council member for finance Peter Hanke. The majority of this will go to the public transport, health care, education and business and employment sectors. The city is available to answer questions on these topics.
- Public transport: There are many public transport construction sites in the summer, are there too many at once?Hanke: “It is the right time. Every construction site is a problem, but I ask for your understanding, this is the only way a modern public transport network can be offered.”
- Individual transport: The city street is being constructed. Will the Lobautunnel also pass through it?
Hanke: “In my role as alderman for economic affairs, I will not give up on the Lobautunnel. An alternative is needed for the overloaded tangent. The expansion of the infrastructure and employment, which are important to me in my role, also depend on the tunnel.”
- Health: Almost a third of the budget goes to health care. Yet there are complaints about long waiting times. Where is there room for improvement so that satisfaction returns?Hanke: “Vienna is a growing city and we are investing billions in the coming years. We have top-class medicines in Vienna, but the entire system needs to be modernized. Here too, the federal government is being called upon.”
- Education: 7.5 billion euros are flowing into the education and care sector. Yet we hear from teachers that it is hardly possible to teach anymore. How do you manage to motivate people for the job?
Hanke: “Each of these jobs requires passion. The challenges have increased. We understand that we need to invest in the school sector and I support this.”
- Economy & Jobs: Unemployment has recently risen again.
Hanke: “We had a peak in employment in July. We need to look after the 18-25 year olds who are my concern. And the over-50s also need the support that Waff provides. And the over-50s also need the support that Waff provides.”
- Film capital Vienna: Film studios are being developed in the port of Vienna. How is Vienna being received as a film capital?
Hanke: “We get a lot of requests, including big projects from streaming services like Netflix. I can’t give details.”
Finally, we asked Hanke about the transfer rumors surrounding Babler, but the city council remained silent.
