Vienna’s minimum income – so many recipients come from abroad

Who benefits from the minimum income? After the discussion about cases where amounts of several thousand euros per month are collected for refugee families, it is worth taking a look at the current figures. In fact, only a small proportion of recipients have an Austrian passport.

Within a year, the number of minimum security recipients in Vienna has increased by 6.3 percent (see graph below). The city attributes this to the labor market: all 55,000 valid minimum income recipients are registered with the AMS. “But the AMS is apparently not able to find real work for these people. Much more needs to be done here,” says city councilor Peter Hacker.
