The JxCat conference in late October will relaunch itself as the “only alternative” to PSC independence

JxCat is calling for its national convention at the end of October, with the aim of re-launching itself as an “alternative” to Government of Salvador Illa and establish itself as the ‘only’ pro-independence opposition to an ERC linked to the PSC and Comuns.

This was decided on Monday morning by JxCat during an extensive meeting of its leadership, in which party leaders, deputies and senators participated, the party’s general secretary, Jordi Turull, explained during a press conference.

The convention could coincide with the anniversary of the United States’ Unilateral Declaration of Independence October 27 2017, a month before ERC will hold a congress on November 30 to renew its management structures.

After Illa received the votes of PSC, ERC and Comuns and was able to form a government, which he calls JxCat “Spanish and autonomous”Carles Puigdemont’s party plans to use its congress to claim itself as the “only pro-independence alternative” to the socialist executive.

According to JxCat, it is time to make the party’s ideological boundaries even more flexible and welcome independents who are dissatisfied with the ERC’s support for Illa. “a large and strong party that is the alternative” to the PSC.

The unknown the question is whether Puigdemont, now without an organic position within the management, will take on a specific role – several internal voices suggest that he will once again assume the presidency of JxCat, now in the hands of Laura Borràs -, taking into account that in recent weeks he has participated in leadership meetings and does not seem willing to leave the front line of politics in the short term.
