US presidential candidate Donald Trump has rejected demands from prominent party member Nikki Haley to change his campaign style and refrain from personal attacks on rival Kamala Harris. The Republican believes he has the right to make unobjective attacks.
He was “very angry” with Harris and therefore felt “entitled to personal attacks,” Trump said at a press conference on Thursday evening (local time).
The former president also said of Harris that he “doesn’t have much respect for her intelligence” and that she would be a “terrible president.” On Tuesday, Haley called on Trump to stop making personal attacks on Harris and instead focus on the substantive debate with the Democratic presidential nominee.
Attacks don’t work
The election cannot be won by talking about what “race” Harris is or how “stupid” she is, Haley said on right-wing Fox News.
Haley believes her party should ‘stop whining’:
The former ambassador and ex-governor was referring to the fact that Trump has repeatedly insulted his rival as unintelligent and questioned her identity as an African-American. Harris is the daughter of a black Jamaican and her mother is from India.
Haley was defeated by Trump in the Republican presidential election, but now supports his candidacy. At a news conference at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, Trump responded to his fellow party member’s demands by saying that he appreciated Haley’s advice, but that he had to run the election “my way.”
Trump snapped at Harris’s comments
The 78-year-old also said he’s been personally attacked by Harris, calling him and his vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance “weird.” The “weird” tag has been applied to Trump and Vance frequently by Harris and other Democrats in recent weeks, but it’s not as disparaging as Trump’s constant comments about his rival’s lack of intelligence.
It was Trump’s second news conference since last week. The right-wing populist has been on the defensive in the election campaign since President Joe Biden announced July 21 that he would not run in the November election, following weeks of debate over his mental state and the Democratic Party quickly uniting behind Vice President Harris as the new nominee.
In several recent polls, Trump has now been slightly overtaken by Harris. Yet at the press conference he claimed he was ahead in the polls.
