Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance at the Democratic Party Convention with an impromptu appearance. The US vice president used the opportunity to warm up the delegates for the upcoming election campaign against her Republican rival Donald Trump.
“Let us fight for the ideals we hold dear, and let us always remember that if we fight, we will win,” Harris shouted to thunderous applause in Chicago.
With her surprise appearance at the start of the four-day party conference, Harris signaled the cohesion of the party and its determination to mobilize all forces in the fight for the White House. The first day of the meeting was centered on Joe Biden’s speech, but the focus of many speakers was on the future.
Clinton full of praise for Harris
Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sees Harris’ appointment as a groundbreaking step for the country. America is on the verge of breaking through the highest and hardest glass ceiling, Clinton, who ran for president in 2016, said at the party conference. “We are writing a new chapter in American history,” the 76-year-old said to loud cheers. “The future is here.”
Harris wants to become the first female president in American history. In 2016, Hillary Clinton was the first female presidential candidate of a major party in the US. At the time, she wanted to make history and become the first woman to be appointed executive chair of the White House. However, she lost to her Republican opponent Donald Trump, whom Harris will now face in November.
Clinton on Trump’s personal attacks:
Clinton said of Trump: “He makes fun of her name and her laugh — sounds familiar.” She argued that the contrast between the two candidates could hardly be greater. “Kamala cares about children, families and America. Donald only cares about himself.” Harris fights for the people of the country. “I know her heart and her integrity.”
The wife of former US President Bill Clinton was First Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001. She later served as a senator and Secretary of State under then-President Barack Obama.
Walz confirmed as replacement
The US Democrats confirmed Walz earlier at their party conference as their vice-presidential candidate for the elections in November. The few thousand delegates voted purely ceremonially for the governor of the state of Minnesota as the so-called running mate for Harris. The two had already been officially nominated via online votes before the party conference.
The party had brought forward the selection of candidates and conducted it digitally – due to deadlines for printing ballots in a state. The voting procedure in Chicago is therefore purely symbolic in nature. According to the party, a similar ceremonial vote is planned for Harris on Wednesday evening Central European Time.
Party conference is accompanied by protests
Walz will deliver a major speech at the party conference on Thursday night, Harris on Friday. The 59-year-old’s performance will be the grand finale to the four-day gathering, which is primarily intended to celebrate the new duo and build momentum for the rest of the election campaign.
The US Democratic Party convention in Chicago was accompanied by large pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Several thousand people took part in a protest march to the venue on Monday afternoon, where the main program of the four-day meeting began in the evening (local time). The protest was primarily directed against the actions of the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip and the American military support for Israel.
