The US and Philippine governments have agreed to accept Afghan asylum seekers on the island temporarily. Those affected who had worked for the US would wait there for their special visas.
With these visas, they will then be allowed to enter the United States. This was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Manila. The number of asylum seekers admitted is “limited”. According to reports, the US had already asked the alliance partner in 2022 to temporarily accommodate around 50,000 people from Afghanistan who are fleeing the Taliban. However, there were concerns about possible terrorist attacks in the Philippines. Now they are said to have agreed on thousands or tens of thousands of people.
US to cover costs
Last year, government sources in Manila said 600 Afghans would participate in a pilot phase, followed by others who would be allowed to stay in the Philippines for up to 59 days. The US would cover all costs, including food, medical care and lodging.
The US government withdrew all its troops from Afghanistan at the end of August 2021, ending the international military operation after almost twenty years. Shortly before that, the Taliban had taken power again. The international withdrawal was chaotic and met with much criticism and incomprehension.
