County Councilor Anton “Toni” Mattle succeeds LH Günther Platter. In an interview, the “Tiroler Krone” wanted to know how the new top candidate of the ÖVP works and what is important to him.
„kron What was it like when you found out you had to succeed Günther Platter?
Anton Mattlea: It pulled the rug from under my feet. I was not prepared for that and I was not prepared for that. I said: Günther, you must give me some time.
Which values are important to you?
I would describe myself as a classic Christian socialist who definitely has a performance-oriented approach.
After the accident in Galtür, you became known as a crisis manager. What can you tell us?
One crisis is not the other. But one of the recipes for building resilience is by talking. This is something very important for the head and the heart. You also need to keep a cool head.
How do you differ from Günther Platter?
One difference is that I’ve had a business for 30 years. I define the Tyrolean economy as a diverse economy, but it bears responsibility for society, for workers and for the environment. But there are also parallels with Günther Platter: I am someone who seeks balance, is not buzzing and who is a good listener.
Are you rebuilding the party?
I have had good experiences in mixed teams, across genders, generations, but also across social classes. I can’t be more specific yet.
Where do you see the future of Tyrol?
There is homework to do, such as inflation. Housing is always an important theme. Just like the energy transition. Neighborhoods are incredibly important – that’s where the opportunities for economic development lie. Another goal is diversity in job descriptions.
Can you imagine wind turbines in Tyrol?
I am not afraid of contact with the technologies. There is a certain potential in that, but that is still in landscape protection areas, although I am not afraid of wind farms. But let’s see that we expand hydroelectric power and photovoltaic power, I am convinced that the performance of photovoltaic systems will continue to increase.
Hydropower has always been criticized.
We need new compromises. We will not make the energy transition if we do not expand hydropower and solar energy in equal measure.
theme traffic. Continue with block handling?
Certainly a major concern. I am a big fan of the intelligent transport system ie measuring or block handling maybe even from the north of Bavaria.
The ÖVP is not doing so well in the polls…
The results of the last elections were historically good, times have changed. I will do my best to take people with me. Even in these volatile times, a bit of realistic optimism is needed. All in all, it is necessary to grant the People’s Party a certain scope. It takes tolerance.
Are you going to commute from Galtür to Innsbruck?
For me it is important to have a home base. It’s totally awesome when you come home in the evening or at night and Daniela is still up and talking to me, asking me how the day was – that feels good. And when we have breakfast together, I feel like it’s a good day.
You have five cows. What can you learn from caring for animals?
I have a shared flat with a cow, we do it together. It’s those moments when you can switch off completely, because when you’re dealing with animals. They demand 100 percent of your attention.
How do you spend the holiday?
With my very, very large family.
