The red days of fate reached their finale on Friday. After his resignation as chairman of the Linz SPÖ, Klaus Luger is also resigning as mayor of the state capital. “This change of heart probably happened overnight,” explains Nikolaus Frings, journalist for the domestic policy of “Krone”, in an interview with Jana Pasching.
For Andreas Babler, the situation means “red in distress”. “It comes at an absolutely inopportune time, in the middle of the election campaign. If that had happened a year ago or a year from now, I don’t think it would have had the same media impact as it does now.” We also hear again and again about plans to have Vienna city councillor Peter Hanke replace Babler after the election installation, Frings reports. But here too, there is no agreement within the party.
Linz also doesn’t seem like a good place for Babler. “Although it often starts in Linz, but not really for him at that time. We remember the following: There was a party conference where Hans-Peter Doskozil was mistakenly elected SPÖ leader, at least for one day. Andreas Babler was then elected in Vienna and not in Linz. And Luger, at least that’s what I remember, clearly expressed his support for Doskozil at this party event a little over a year ago and can also be classified in a different camp within the party.
