Proposals for tax increases are rejected by the majority in Austria, but are not only considered good in the SPÖ. This is also evident from the letter from Doris Bures that was leaked to the “Krone”.
With a tax rate of 43.6 percent, our country is known as one of the absolute leaders in Europe. This is probably the reason why 82 percent of Austrians are clearly against new taxes.
A wish that is so clearly and consistently supported by many, but not all, parties that are running for the elections on September 29. The SPÖ around the long-controversial party leader Andreas Babler calls in its election campaign for new taxes on inheritances and assets.
A demand that is apparently not always supported even within the party itself.
“Suspect it’s not serious”
This can also be seen in the letter from the second chair of the National Council, Doris Bures, revealed by the “Krone”. In her letter to the party’s executive committee, intended for internal use but published externally, she noted that her party’s focus on numerous tax increases while simultaneously demanding free state services could give rise to “the suspicion that it is not serious”.
Bures has now given her approval to the party program that has now been approved. “That of course does not automatically mean that all representatives in the SPÖ actually support the desire for new taxes,” according to a red insider.
