The state elections in the German state of Saxony are still causing excitement two days after election day. After the AfD lost a mandate on Monday due to a software error during the counting, the police launched an investigation on Tuesday into manipulated ballots.
Accordingly, unknown people had pasted over the cross on several postal ballots and marked the right-wing extremist Free Saxony party instead. According to the current status, about 100 pieces are fakes. The Ministry of State Security took over the investigation and reportedly confiscated two manipulated ballots.
Manipulated ballots in two constituencies
The manipulated ballots were discovered in two constituencies. “We have become aware of this suspicion in relation to constituencies 36011 and 36012,” said a spokesman for the city of Dresden.
The two constituencies are located in Langebrück, in the north of Dresden. In constituency 36012, the Free Saxons did remarkably well. There, they each won 10.2 percent with 59 direct votes and 60 list votes. In total, the smallest party won 2.2 percent in the state elections.
The Free Saxons are classified as a right-wing extremist movement by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
