Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) wants former ÖBAG boss and Secretary-General of the Ministry of Finance Thomas Schmid to be brought before the ÖVP’s corruption subcommittee if he comes to Austria just before a committee day. A dispute had recently arisen over the demonstration, as Karner, citing state service, saw no basis for it.
Schmid has moved abroad but has been subpoenaed before the commission.
The opposition therefore demanded in the committee that the police take him there – Karner stressed that they could only do this if there was a legal basis for it.
Since the legal, legislative and scientific service of the parliament, unlike the constitutional service, now saw such a thing, Karner ordered the Vienna State Police to take Schmid into custody when he came to Austria.
However, the police are only allowed to stop Schmid for a short time – anything else would be disproportionate. He would therefore have to appear in Austria just before the respective research day to actually be presented.
