Party in crisis – Why the German Greens are stepping down as a unit

Date:

The entire party board of the German Greens resigns (see video above). A new start should now help the party out of the crisis. But how could it have come to this in the first place?

The Greens have had disastrous results in four elections in a row: in the European elections and in the state elections in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg. In Thuringia and Brandenburg, where they were involved in state government, they failed to cross the five percent hurdle and were thrown out of the state parliament altogether.

Internally, it is said that the party is not active enough on the Tiktok platform. Moreover, it was probably recognized too late how much young people had suffered from the restrictions of the corona pandemic.

Tightening of asylum legislation
Two other possible reasons that some members see are not discussed publicly: the party’s position on the war in the Gaza Strip, which is sometimes perceived as too one-sided (pro-Israel), and the tightening of asylum legislation. This was not well received by some voters.

Another possible motive: outgoing co-chairs Omid Nouripour and Ricarda Lang have been repeatedly criticized in public. Lang has been accused of speaking too quickly and convolutedly when he appears on television. Nouripour’s statements have sometimes been offensive; recently he called the traffic light a “transitional government.” Both have found it difficult to distinguish their party from the unpopular coalition.

Ten to eleven percent in research
In the 2021 federal election, the Greens won 14.8 percent of the vote. If there were an election this coming Sunday, that would be only ten to eleven percent, according to the latest polls.
