The presidency of the General Council for the Judiciary

Date:

The plenary session of the CGPJ has so far failed to break the blockade on the election of the presidency of the body. The vote is set for 12:00.

The plenary session of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) agreed on Tuesday to nominate the Supreme Court judges Ana María Ferrer and Isabel Perelló, both progressives, as new candidates. The vote is set for 12:00.

The CGPJ said in a statement that it has so far failed to break the blockade on electing the body’s president after three hours of meetings.

The organic law of the judiciary requires a reinforced majority of three-fifths of the members of the plenary, which forces an agreement between both blocs, which has not been viable so far due to the immovable positions of both groups, although the members – ten elected on the proposal of the PSOE and the same number from the PP – are aware that “we must get out of this situation as soon as possible”

Ana Ferrer is the favorite of the progressives, after judge Pilar Teso chose to withdraw from the race because she has no support. However, Ferrer is also not popular with conservatives and therefore everything now points to Perelló as the big favorite.

The conservatives would thus agree to the progressives’ request that a woman hold the presidency of the Council for the first time in its history.
