No matter how often Chancellor Karl Nehammer and his ÖVP can assure that they represent the middle of society and do not want to cooperate with “dangerous people” like FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl, the NEOS do not believe in this at all. On Tuesday, NEOS chairwoman Beate Meinl-Reisinger warned of a new edition of turquoise blue – with a hijacked ÖVP poster.
Meinl-Reisinger said he was worried “that the ÖVP is not credible in rejecting the FPÖ.” Under no circumstances should there be an “Ibiza 2.0” after the election, she said from behind a pink desk in the government district on Vienna’s Minoritenplatz. Behind her hung two slightly modified ÖVP election posters, showing Nehammer and the slogan: “Security with the FPÖ.”
Meinl-Reisinger promoted her own party as a possible driving force in a “reform coalition” and repeated her announcement that she did not want blue politicians in any government.
Federal anthem as background music
The performance was involuntarily accompanied by the Austrian national anthem, performed by the military band, which was played at a reception in front of the Hofburg. The NEOS boss was happy to take over the ball, after all, the elections for the National Council are about the future of the republic: “Who will get the pen in hand to continue writing the history of Austria?”
