German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is aiming for a second term and wants to lead his SPD into the 2025 federal elections. But his plan is facing massive resistance from citizens – even among red sympathizers…
According to a survey, more than two-thirds of Germans reject Scholz as a candidate for the SPD chancellorship.
A survey by the YouGov polling institute for the Süddeutsche Zeitung found that 68 percent were against the head of government’s candidate for chancellor. However, 20 percent are in favor of Scholz running again.

Pistorius does better
Last weekend, Scholz, despite weak opinion polls, reaffirmed his claim that he is a candidate for chancellor in the 2025 federal elections. His party colleague and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is doing better in surveys.
He “resolutely expects that the SPD and I will get such a strong mandate in 2025 that we will also lead the next government,” the chancellor told the “Tagesspiegel”. “I am a runner and I am in good shape,” Scholz said. Pistorius also wants, “like many others, that I become chancellor again.”
