Should take 75 days – Serbia before reintroducing compulsory military service

Date:

This was abolished in 2011 and now Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has given the green light for the reintroduction of military service in Serbia. Women can also continue to serve in the armed forces on a voluntary basis.

As Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, he signed a document agreeing to a mandatory 75-day military service for men, Vučić said at an officer’s ordination in Belgrade.

Serbia needs a strong army and needs to buy and produce more weapons, Vučić added. “It is not our desire to attack anyone. “But it is our desire to deter those who threaten us every day.” He did not elaborate on who he sees as the source of the threats.

The army demanded longer conscription
The government still has to formally approve compulsory military service. This is considered certain; Prime Minister Milos Vučević is a loyal follower of the president. The Serbian army leadership had already called for compulsory military service of up to four months earlier this year.

The country is struggling with strong emigration
In early September, Vučić said that the length of compulsory military service should be carefully considered. It should not be too long, so that more young men do not turn their backs on the country. Serbia, like other Balkan countries, is struggling with strong emigration, especially of the younger and more active population.
