Councillor Mikel Torres will “promote a minimum wage that corresponds to socio-economic realities”

The Second Vice-President and Minister of Economy, Labour and Employment appeared before the Commission of the Basque Parliament to present the objectives of his department in this term.

The Second Deputy Lehendakari and Minister of Economy, Labour and Employment, Mikel Torres, has announced that during this term his department will “promote a minimum wage for collective bargaining that corresponds to socio-economic realities”, and will launch a series of initiatives aimed at guaranteeing “decent” work for all workers in the Basque Autonomous Community (CAV), for which it will strengthen recruitment incentives and intensify inspections to prevent “abuse” in internship contracts.

Torres, who appeared before the Basque Parliament’s Committee on Economy, Labour and Employment to present his department’s objectives for this term, has in turn announced an “upward” revision of “some” of the economic indicators which Eustat will update on September 24.

In his speech, the counsel discussed the state of affairs regarding the resources allocated to the CAV through the CAV Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Mechanisms (RRM) Funds since last June. In this way, she has indicated that of the 2.503 million euros allocated, 1.241 million euros are intended for regional management and 1.262 million for state management.

Furthermore, in the area of ​​employment matters, he reported that his department, together with social actors, will continue to examine the pilot experiences of social security working time reduction no salary cuts; the promotion of teleworking; and employee participation in the strategic decisions of companies.

In turn, he explained that the Basque government will support the government establishment of an international HUB of the vanguard in the field of the social economy, in order to make the autonomous community visible in this field “as a reference for the whole of Europe”.

Accidents and industrial disputes

The Ministry of Economic Affairs will also work to integrate occupational hazard policies into education. In this way, it will try to include “occupational health and safety topics” in primary and secondary education, vocational training modules and university courses. At the same time, a shock plan will be launched to prevent accidents in the forestry sector, and measures will be taken to “find solutions to the shortage of personnel” focusing on occupational hazards.

The confidential advisor has committed to deepening the consultation with the most representative unions and business organizations. Torres has appreciated the Social Dialogue Table and expressed the wish that this forum “can be expanded”, counting on “all” social actors.

The adviser also referred to the “high incidence” of labor disputes in the BAC, which he said “does not contribute to creating an optimal climate of labor relations and the image of the country.”
