The Italian opposition shows little enthusiasm for the new European Commission that will be presented on Tuesday. Austrian Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) is also criticized.
Opposition leader Elly Schlein said of Brunner’s appointment as the new EU Commissioner for Migration and Home Affairs: “We will continue to push for solidarity and the acceptance of migrants among EU countries.” In her view, the new team of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is also “more conservative than the previous one”.
“Commissioners will investigate carefully”
“Now we will carefully examine the EU commissioners and their departments. One of the shortcomings is that there is no longer a special labour commissioner. And Italy is losing the economic department. “We will have to fight hard to defend the prospect of joint European investments,” Schlein told the newspaper La Stampa.
“During the hearings, we will put all our weight behind ensuring that the priorities of the next European Commission align with those of the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen,” the Italian politician stressed.
