Conversation with Erdogan – Van der Bellen: ‘We have to keep up the pace’

Date:

Bilateral relations between Austria and Turkey have developed very positively this year, Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen said on Wednesday after meeting his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“It’s important to maintain this momentum. That is why it was important for me to meet the Turkish president during my visit to New York,” said Van der Bellen. In the conversation, he thanked Erdogan for his efforts “to find solutions to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine”. however, development needs to be taken very seriously, which is why more international unity and determination is needed.

Erdogan sees himself as a mediator
The Turkish government maintains close ties with both Ukraine and Russia and sees itself as a mediator between the two parties. Under her and the United Nations, the warring parties agreed in early summer to resume grain exports from three blocked Ukrainian ports. The mood between the Austrian and Turkish governments had been frosty for a long time, especially when Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) was foreign minister and chancellor. However, there have been several bilateral meetings in recent weeks, including at government level.

Van der Bellen also had an appointment on Wednesday with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, along with Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (both ÖVP). In the evening, the return flight to Vienna was scheduled for Van der Bellen and Nehammer. Schallenberg will remain in New York through Friday; His speech to the UN General Assembly is scheduled for Thursday.
