Minister for Integration Susanne Raab (ÖVP) expects 50,000 asylum applications by the end of the year, a record of recent years. Most applications still come from Syrians and Afghans, and Austria is also supporting 75,000 people displaced from Ukraine as part of “neighborhood relief”. “All this is a tour de force for integration work, for the education system, the labor market and the social systems, but also for us as a society as a whole,” says Raab.
In addition, many people who came to Austria in 2015 or earlier are not sufficiently integrated. Five years ago today, the Civic Integration Act came into effect, which is “a cornerstone of civic integration”, the civic integration minister said in a broadcast on Thursday. Since 2017, 800,000 counseling contacts have been established and nationwide uniform German courses have been created, which have been used by more than 90,000 people.
In 2022, the integration budget will be increased to 105 million euros.
Number of German courses doubled
The Civic Integration Act obliges those entitled to asylum and subsidiary protection to participate in “values and orientation courses”. As of 2017, about 57,000 people have attended the courses, of whom about 22,000 are women and about 35,000 are men. The number of German courses offered has doubled. According to the Minister of Integration, about 45,000 places are currently being offered and places for Ukrainians are constantly being added.
