US election campaign – Iranian hackers gave stolen information to Biden team

Date:

U.S. intelligence agencies and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have published new findings about hacking attacks on internal communications of Donald Trump’s campaign team that took place in late June. According to the information, the stolen data was forwarded to Joe Biden’s team.

The goal of such actions is to sow discord, undermine confidence in the electoral process, and influence the outcome of the U.S. election, according to the joint statement from the FBI, ODNI (Office of National Intelligence) and CISA (Cybersecurity Agency). There is no indication that the recipients responded or reacted in any way to the forwarding of the stolen information. The Iranian hackers are continuing their efforts to send stolen, non-public material from the Trump team to the U.S. media.

Iran’s mission to the UN in New York rejected the reports. “The Islamic Republic of Iran does not participate in the domestic unrest or electoral controversies in the United States,” state news agency IRNA quoted the statement as saying.

Only recently have several US authorities and the US technology industry warned of “foreign actors”. “Russia, Iran and China in particular seek to exacerbate divisions in American society for their own benefit and see elections as moments of vulnerability,” the report said. Such influence poses an imminent threat to the US and will not be tolerated.

Microsoft executive Brad Smith stressed at a U.S. congressional hearing on Wednesday that the “most dangerous moment” would be 48 hours before the November vote. According to Smith, the proxy war looks like this: “Essentially, it’s an Iran versus Trump and Russia versus Harris campaign.”
