Next Sunday, Austria will vote – if the Ibiza scandal and all its consequences had not occurred, former Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache might still play a role in the FPÖ. But instead of having to fight for votes, the Viennese flew to the island of Ibiza that was so fateful for him on Thursday…
The ex-FPÖ leader boarded the plane from Vienna to Ibiza at 3:55 p.m. in good spirits. “He kept talking to other passengers at the airport and on the plane. But at one point during the flight he fell asleep,” says an eyewitness who was on the same plane in an interview with “Krone”.
That he would fly to the Spanish party island so shortly before the National Council elections would have been unthinkable a few years ago. Today, five years after the “Ibiza affair”, Strache seems to have little interest in the domestic election campaign – instead he was clearly looking forward to a good time on the island, which would change his life. How the ex-vice chancellor spends his holidays remains his secret. “Private is private,” Strache asked for understanding when asked by “Krone”.
What happened then
Review: On May 17, 2019, “Spiegel” and “SZ” published the historic video, recorded in a villa in Ibiza. The main characters were the FPÖ politicians Heinz-Christian Strache and Johann Gudenus, who talked to a fake Russian oligarch’s niece about how to take over the “crown” and seize power.
Once it became known, the fateful evening saw the breakup of the turquoise-blue coalition around Strache and then-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz. Strache had to resign and Gudenus quickly disappeared from the scene.
Strache founded the party
But Heinz-Christian Strache has not completely left politics yet; with his party “Team HC Strache – Alliance for Austria” he wants to participate again in the state and local elections in Vienna in 2025. In his first attempt at the local elections in 2020, he failed to reach the five percent mark with 3.27 percent.
