Front National founder Jean-Marie Le Pen has died at the age of 96. The French right-wing extremist was the father of politician Marine Le Pen, who had followed in his footsteps years ago and continued his political legacy.
Jean-Marie Le Pen was leader of the far-right party from 1972 to 2011. In 2015 he was expelled from the party for “serious misconduct”. From 2004 to 2019 he was a Member of the European Parliament.
The Holocaust denier ran in five presidential elections, surprisingly reaching the second round against Jacques Chirac in 2002.

Constantly in conflict with the judiciary
Over the course of his political career, Le Pen repeatedly caused a stir with racist, anti-Semitic and, most recently, homophobic statements. He also made headlines with insults and other violations of the law. As of April 2007, he had been legally convicted a total of 25 times.
The media always labeled Le Pen as a right-wing extremist politician. He always represented the motto “ni droite, ni gauche, français” (neither right nor left, French, note).
