The Israeli army continues its airstrikes on Lebanon. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, at least 72 people were killed in the latest airstrikes on Wednesday. According to Israeli army chief Herzi Halevi, the bombings serve as a possible ground offensive. According to the US Department of Defense, such a step is not imminent. According to a TV report, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has now given the green light for a ceasefire with the Lebanese Hezbollah militia.
The N12 broadcaster on Thursday quoted an unnamed Netanyahu aide. Far-right politicians in Jerusalem sharply criticized a possible ceasefire. “The battle in the north can end in only one way: with the destruction of Hezbollah and its ability to harm the residents of the (Israeli) north,” Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich wrote on the short-message platform X.
Excitement among right-wing extremist coalition partners
The far-right coalition party Ozma Yehudit has called an emergency meeting amid reports of a possible ceasefire, news site ynet reported. Netanyahu is dependent on his far-right partners for his political survival.
The prime minister’s office immediately said: “The ceasefire report is false. It is an American-French proposal to which the prime minister has not even responded.”
US and several countries call for ceasefire
After massive Israeli bombardments in Lebanon that killed more than 500 people – including apparently more than 100 Syrian refugees who had fled the horrors of war in their country – a group of states around the US and Germany, together with key Arab countries, are calling for a halt to the fighting. The requested ceasefire would last 21 days and create space for a diplomatic solution to the conflict between Israel and the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon and to the Gaza war that has been going on for almost a year, according to the joint statement supported by the US, Germany, the EU, Australia, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
