The Italian government wants to impose fines on pilots who search for migrant boats in distress at sea. This is intended to prevent irregular arrivals.
The fines can amount to 10,000 euros. According to the new decree, planes taking off or landing in Italy and seeking to rescue migrants must immediately notify of any emergency and follow the authorities’ order. Otherwise, the aircraft could be impounded and impounded for 20 days for repeat violations.
In May, the Italian government had already banned NGO aircraft from using airports near migrant boat shipping lanes. Some organizations subsequently ignored the ban. Ships were also often seized at ports and had to make long detours to land migrants.
Stricter rules for visas
The new decree also provides for a tough approach to fraud in the visa system. Employers who have submitted an application to hire a foreigner within the past three years but have never processed it will not be allowed to submit any further application.
The right-wing government led by Giorgia Meloni also wants to work with African governments to block the departure of migrants and set up centers in Albania.
