According to media reports, Germany has begun newly negotiated deportations to Turkey. Initially, a total of 200 Turks will be brought to their home country. The repatriation must be handled decentrally via scheduled flights.
Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) announced in an interview the consistent deportation of irregular migrants to Turkey. “We have now achieved that returns to Turkey can take place faster and more effectively and that Turkey can take back citizens who are not allowed to stay in Germany more quickly,” Faeser told the newspapers of media group Funke. She spoke of “great progress” and “a new building block to limit irregular migration”.
In contrast to previous migration agreements with, for example, Uzbekistan or Kenya, return to Turkey may be accompanied by large-scale deportations.
Hundreds of deportations per week?
Nearly 1,300 Turkish citizens were deported from Germany in 2023, according to a response from the German federal government to an AfD request in March. According to figures from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, approximately 14,500 Turks in Germany had to leave the country by the end of April 2024.
According to “FAZ,” Ankara has offered to take back up to 500 citizens per week. Appropriate preparations have already been made.
