From the federal government to the municipalities: the results of the National Council elections in detail

Date:

Austria has voted. After a full five-year term, the composition of the new National Council was determined on Sunday, and for the first time in the history of the Second Republic, the candidate in the top spot is not referred to as either ÖVP or SPÖ. Here you will find all results in detail.

The polls predict it: the enormous lead of the ÖVP in 2019 is no longer left, the PVV storms to first place. The SPÖ fell to third place nationally for the first time, followed by NEOS and the Greens.

Which majorities emerge?
Analogous to the shift in the voting market, the distribution of mandates in the National Council is also confused. Five years ago, the ÖVP had three mathematical partners for a two-party coalition with the SPÖ, FPÖ and the Greens, but with the current election results this has become much more difficult, especially since all other parties have ruled out cooperation with the FPÖ under President Herbert Kickl.

First reliable figures from the communities
Due to a change in law, the preliminary final result, including the postal vote forecast, is not expected until around 11 p.m. this time, as the majority of absentee ballots will be counted for the first time on Sunday. At the municipal level, the final results are available much earlier throughout Austria:

The first final results are also gradually coming in from the districts:

Red-black descent
Over the time since 1945, the dramatic shifts in the domestic party landscape have become apparent. In the case of the SPÖ and ÖVP one can no longer speak of major parties; the FPÖ has overtaken them. The former small parties Greens and NEOS are also nibbling heavily at the voter tail.

According to observers and also the political protagonists, the election campaign was relatively fair; the flood disaster in the middle of the hot phase created a frothy undertone in the numerous debates and duels. Of course, the trend of an FPÖ triumph, which has been clearly visible in the polls for months, has not changed until election day.
