The Burgenlanders will elect a new state parliament on January 19. The election date was decided by the state government on Monday. The election campaign must last as short as possible, state governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) emphasized to journalists.
The SPÖ will therefore only start on January 6 – four days before the early election day on January 10. The deadline for voters and the campaign cost ceiling of 300,000 euros is October 29.
“Competition of the best ideas”
For Doskozil, the January election date worked well in the last state election. This would allow the government to work throughout the calendar year. There should also be a lull in state politics during the Christmas period and then a short ‘competition for the best ideas’.
Convince voters
When asked about Norbert Hofer, who will be the FPÖ’s top candidate in the state election campaign, Doskozil said: “I really don’t care who runs for the Freedom Party or for other parties” – even ex-chancellor Sebastian Kurz for the ÖVP That would not be a problem, the governor joked. He wants to document the work of his state government over the past five years and thereby convince voters.
According to Doskozil, Monday’s meeting of the state government was also the last based on paper files. The entire state administration has now been converted to electronic files. “I don’t have a laptop, but I now had to give in to a tablet,” said the state governor.
