Since the political bang with the announcement of Schützenhöfer’s resignation, ÖVP director Detlev Eisel-Eiselsberg and club president Barbara Riener have been in talks for the successor to Drexler – but especially Werner Amon. The “Krone” had already reported on June 12 that the West Styrian was traded as a favorite.
Now designated governor and ÖVP boss Christopher Drexler gets to work. The party board of the ÖVP will meet on Tuesday morning. At 10:00, Drexler invites you to the party headquarters on Karmeliterplatz in Graz – and introduces his new strongman to the black government team. There could also be a new division of departments within the ÖVP. There is speculation that Amon will take over Juliane Bogner-Strauß’s educational agenda.

Werner Amon was born in 1969 in Graz and grew up in the provincial capital and in Knittelfeld. From September 2016 to May 2017 he was Secretary General of the ÖVP – Sebastian Kurz dismantled him – and from November 1994 to June 2019, intermittently, a member of the National Council. In 2019 he was sworn in as ombudsman.
What benefited Amon in the race for the seat of the state council: he has known Drexler for 36 years, both grew up near the Volksgarten in Graz (they did not know each other at the time) and both became political hand in hand on the student council , the young ÖVP and the ÖAAB socialized.
