Two Italians, father and son, are accused of publishing manipulated pornographic videos on a US website in 2020 featuring the face of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni instead of the actresses. During the trial, Meloni testified as a witness via video conference on Tuesday.
“I filed a report because I find what happened unbearable. “I work every day to combat violence against women and I must lead by example and take action against those who do injustice,” Meloni said in her response to prosecutor Maria Paola Asara, Italian media reported.
Meloni wants to tighten the penalties
Meloni emphasized that her government wants to strengthen penalties for these types of violations. “With artificial intelligence, it will soon be impossible to understand what is true and what is not. We must start with the responsibility of the individual,” said the Prime Minister.
100,000 euros in damages are being demanded
Meloni’s lawyer Maria Giulia Marongiu demanded damages of 100,000 euros during the proceedings. If the head of government is awarded the amount, she wants to donate it to a fund for victims of violence set up at the Ministry of the Interior.
Judge Monia Adami postponed the trial in the town of Sassari in Sardinia until February 2025. More prosecution witnesses will be heard.
