Close race – New poll: this coalition is the most popular

Date:

The battle for a coalition at the federal level is in full swing. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen has not yet given an order to form a government. The party leaders of the FPÖ, ÖVP and SPÖ have until the end of next week to hold talks to investigate what form of cooperation is conceivable. Meanwhile, there is a new study on which coalition variant the Austrians would currently prefer. The result is close.

In a Gallup poll published on Thursday, the so-called “sweet tooth” coalition of ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS received the most support with 26 percent.

Blue-turquoise in second place
The second most popular option would be a collaboration between the FPÖ with Herbert Kickl and ÖVP, which is supported by 24 percent. The desire for turquoise-red-green (14 percent) or blue-turquoise without kick (12 percent) is significantly lower.

54% are dissatisfied with the election results
According to the representative online survey conducted at the beginning of October (1,000 respondents aged 16 and older), more than half of voters – 54 percent to be precise – are dissatisfied with the election results.

The majority wants Nehammer to remain as chancellor
A majority of 51 percent would like to see the ÖVP under Karl Nehammer in the future government, 41 percent want the SPÖ to govern together with Andreas Babler and 38 percent want the FPÖ to govern together with Herbert Kickl.

Junior partner: NEOS is more popular than the Greens
Between the two smaller parties, the NEOS are currently significantly more popular than the Greens due to the role of junior partner in a possible three-party coalition: 35 percent would like the NEOS to be in government, compared to just 19 percent of the Greens.

The ÖVP-SPÖ coalition is the least popular
Accordingly, support for a three-party coalition of ÖVP-SPÖ-NEOS at 26 percent is significantly higher than that for a turquoise-red-green variant (14 percent). Only a tenth wants government cooperation between the FPÖ and SPÖ. The most unpopular thing at the moment would be a ‘grand coalition’ between the ÖVP and SPÖ with only a wafer-thin majority (5 percent).

Government cooperation requires at least two of the three larger parties, Alexander Van der Bellen emphasized on Wednesday. Herbert Kickl (FPÖ), Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) and Andreas Babler (SPÖ) have until the end of next week. The Federal President would then invite them to take note of the outcome of the discussions.
