Helga Konrad was Minister of Women’s Affairs from 1995 to 1997. The Styrian politician has now died at the age of 76.
Konrad studied Romance and English studies in Graz and at the Sorbonne in 1967. After her doctorate in 1975, she worked for the Styrian Chamber of Labor.
She became a municipal councilor in her hometown (1993 to 1995) and eventually federal chairman of the SPÖ Women.
‘Whole men make half, half’ campaign
From 1990 to 1993 and in 1996 and 1997 to 1999, Konrad was a member of the National Council. During her term as minister, she launched the ‘Whole men make half half’ campaign, which caused a stir in Austria.
The aim of this campaign was to promote the partnership-based division of care work through legal arrangements in family and matrimonial law.
In 1999 she received the Grand Gold Medal of Honor with the Star for services to the Republic of Austria.
