US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has expressed concern to Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over reports that Israeli forces have fired on UN peacekeeping positions in Lebanon.
In a call with his Israeli counterpart, Austin called for the safety and security of the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, and the Lebanese Armed Forces, the U.S. Department of Defense said.
According to the Hezbollah militia, a third UN soldier has now been injured. This happened when Hezbollah fought Israeli forces trying to invade the village of Ramia in southern Lebanon.
Galilee shelled
Meanwhile, the Israeli army intercepted five projectiles fired from Lebanon on Sunday. Alarm sirens sounded in several areas of northern Israel around 9 a.m. (8 a.m. CEST), the army said on Sunday. Several regions in the Galilee region, as well as the coastal city of Haifa and the Carmel Mountains were affected.
The military said the bullets were successfully intercepted. On Saturday, Yom Kippur, the highest Jewish holiday, the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon fired about 320 projectiles at Israel, according to the Israeli military.
Meanwhile, Lebanese state media reported that an Israeli airstrike hit a mosque in southern Lebanon on Sunday. During the night, the “old mosque in the center of the village of Kfar Tibnit was completely destroyed,” national news agency NNA reported. Mayor Fuad Yassin told AFP that the mosque was at least 100 years old. Kfar Tibnit is located about eight kilometers from the border with Israel.
Clashes along the border
Hezbollah reported two clashes with Israeli soldiers along the border on Sunday. The pro-Iranian militia used explosives against Israeli soldiers near the Lebanese village of Ramia “as they tried to invade.” The fighting lasted about an hour. The militia also said it had attacked Israeli soldiers on both sides of the border.
According to official figures, 2,255 people have been killed in Lebanon since the conflict with Israel began about a year ago. This is reported by the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
