North Korea on Sunday ordered its military units stationed near the border with South Korea to remain on alert to fire, the isolated state said. South Korea is said to have previously sent drones with propaganda leaflets to Pyongyang.
The order stated that “eight artillery brigades were to be on standby at full war strength to open fire.” Additional units were ordered to “intensify surveillance on high alert,” while “anti-aircraft observation posts were reinforced” in the capital Pyongyang.
The drones reportedly sent by the South dropped propaganda against the regime and the leaflets were full of “seditious rumors and nonsense,” North Korea’s KCNA news agency reported.
North Korea speaks of ‘military attack’
Flying drones into Pyongyang’s airspace “may be considered a military attack,” North Korea’s Foreign Ministry said, adding that it was “an intolerable and inexcusable serious provocation.”
South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun initially denied the allegations, but the country’s Joint Chiefs of Staff later corrected its position, saying in a statement that it “cannot confirm whether the North Korean allegations are true or not .”
