Iran’s judiciary this Sunday reduced the prison sentence to five years for journalists Nilufar Hamidi and Elaha Mohammadi, who exposed the case of Mahsa Amini’s death in 2022, sparking the country’s largest popular protests since the Islamic Revolution from 1979. .
Hamidi was the first reporter to cover Amini’s death, while Mohammadi covered the young woman’s funeral.
Both were sentenced to twelve and thirteen years in prison for numerous crimes, including collaborating with the United States to destabilize the country. They were acquitted of this last charge this Sunday, hence the sentence reduction to 5 years.
However, Iranian human rights organizations say the matter cannot stop there and demand his immediate release.
“The implementation of this new prison sentence is an example of a clear violation of the general amnesty order and this case must be closed,” a spokesperson for Elaha Mohammadi told the reformist newspaper ‘Ham Mihan’, for which he was working at the time of his arrest .
