State elections 2025 – fuss about violation of the Party Support Act

Date:

Political opponent sees violations of SPÖ mandate, which must advertise on social media before the deadline.

A new state parliament will be elected in Burgenland on January 19, 2025. If the SPÖ has its way, the election campaign will not start until January 6 – four days before early election day on January 10. Unofficially, the battle for the body politic seems to have already gained momentum among some candidates, creating the first strange blossoms that any election campaign brings.

New law introduced in June by the SPÖ and the Greens
Only in June did the SPÖ and the Greens approve the new party financing law. The core of the scheme is an upper limit for election campaign costs of 300,000 euros. There is also a clearly defined deadline by which parties and candidates may launch official advertising campaigns. As for the state elections, this is October 29, 2024.

A Facebook post by state parliament member Christian Dax (SPÖ) is already causing a political stir. Dax allegedly violated the Party Support Act, political opponents told the lawyer. His election campaign first appeared on social media on October 11.

It is said that the SPÖ cannot rely on him as an excuse because it is listed as the payer and beneficiary of this report.

Dax himself responds calmly: “Anyone who has followed my social media presence over the years will quickly realize that these are professionally designed pages. As a politically elected representative, I see it as my duty to not only keep my followers informed within a certain time.”

Violations result in high penalties
In the post he only stated that he had been nominated as a candidate for the state elections at the SPÖ state party conference. “The accusation that the Party Support Act has been violated can only come from someone who is terrified of January 19,” Dax said to the ÖVP. His goal remains clear: to enter the state parliament through preferential votes. If the case actually finds its way to the “court”, the SPÖ could risk a fine.
