The EU demands: – More states must pay for climate protection

Date:

The environment ministers of the 27 EU member states agreed on Monday on a common position for the upcoming UN climate conference in Azerbaijan. The EU wants to push for more money for developing countries. To this end, the circle of paying states must also be expanded.

The issue of climate finance is likely to play a central role at the conference, which will take place from November 11 to 22 in the Azerbaijani capital Baku. The question is how developed industrial countries – such as the EU countries – financially support developing countries in climate protection measures and adaptation to the consequences of climate change. The European Union insists that not only the historically industrialized countries contribute, but also other industrialized countries that have now developed. There is a strong focus on China.

No specific amount is mentioned
A specific amount that the EU would be willing to contribute additionally was not mentioned after the ministerial meeting. Both public and private money must be added, emphasizes EU Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra. The money must also reach the countries that need it most.

The international community remains divided over what role nuclear energy should play in decarbonizing the economy. As is known, the European Commission has classified nuclear energy as sustainable under certain conditions. Nuclear energy is not explicitly mentioned in the position paper, but it is not excluded either.

The role of “green” nuclear energy
“We must therefore concentrate on the forms of energy that actually make a contribution, and not on the forms that promise to do something but never deliver,” Austrian Climate Minister Leonore Gewessler spoke out against nuclear energy before the meeting. “What has driven emissions reductions in the past and will drive emissions reductions in the future is renewable energy.”

At the last COP28 climate conference in Dubai, about a year ago, the transition away from fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal was fundamentally included in the conclusions for the first time. In addition to sustainable energy, nuclear energy also played a role.
