Right-wing extremist Israelis held a rally on the edge of the Gaza Strip calling for the repopulation of the disputed coastal strip. “Gaza is part of the Land of Israel!” read the T-shirt of an event participant.
Members, parliamentarians and a minister of the right-wing conservative ruling Likud party, chaired by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, were also invited to the event under the motto “Back to Gaza.”
However, a Likud spokesperson emphasized that it was not an event in the name of the party, but a “local initiative.” The initiative of the radical settler organization Nachala took place in the context of the Feast of Tabernacles. The week-long pilgrimage commemorates the Biblical desert walks of the people of Israel. One of the many huts built bore the name of the Likud party.
Netanyahu rules out repopulation
Israel withdrew its army from the Gaza Strip in 2005 and forcibly evacuated about 20 settlements in the coastal strip. Far-right Israelis, including ministers in Netanyahu’s government, are now calling on settlers to return to the area. However, Netanyahu himself had described plans to repopulate the Gaza Strip after the war against the Islamist Hamas as unrealistic.
