Search for government – Van der Bellen will make a statement at 1 p.m

Date:

Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen concluded his talks on Monday with all representatives of the parties represented in the new National Council. Today the head of state appears before the press to inform about the next steps. krone.at reports live from 1 p.m.!

After the talks on Monday in the offices of the Federal President, party leaders Herbert Kickl (FPÖ), Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) and Andreas Babler (SPÖ) remained tight-lipped. Van der Bellen himself also left the further process open.

Party leaders and the president remained tight-lipped on Monday
As he left, Nehammer got nothing out of him other than a curt “Goodbye!” Before this, Kickl had also scared off the waiting journalists: he had given Van der Bellen a crystal glass owl. He said he would only make a public statement after Van der Bellen had spoken to all three party leaders and made his own statement. And Babler also asked for understanding that he would only say something after the Federal President. This is now the case today at 1 p.m.

The head of state had asked Kickl, Nehammer and Babler to investigate who could put together a viable government. People probably haven’t gotten much smarter since the three bilateral talks. Because Nehammer and Babler still do not want to form a coalition with Kickl or the FPÖ.

The ÖVP-SPÖ coalition would likely need a third partner
In contrast, the ÖVP and SPÖ together would have only one surplus mandate, which would make a corresponding two-party coalition difficult and would likely require the inclusion of a third partner. Van der Bellen must therefore ask himself whether this time he will give a mandate to form a government or whether he will ask for party talks again.
