So far, Slovakia has approved all EU sanctions against Russia at the political level. Now there was surprisingly the first rejection of the first majority in parliament …
In a statement that was surprisingly accepted on Thursday, the representation of the people in Bratislava called on the representatives of the country to vote against planned further sanctions against Russia in the future. These would cause economic damage to the country itself, according to the reasoning of the application submitted by the smallest SNS of the government.
Slovakia also against full end for gas deliveries from Russia
The decision must not only apply to EU level, but also to other international authorities. The left-wing national Prime Minister Robert Fico announced on the same day in a statement available for the DPA that he had informed EU president Antonio Costa about the result of the vote. In the discussion that had previously agreed, he also announced that Slovakia would not agree to a complete end of the deliveries of gas, oil and uranium from Russia.
Slovakia has so far agreed with all sanctions
So far, Fico had repeatedly criticized with individual EU sanctions because they would harm Slovakia more than Russia. In contrast to Hungary Conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Fico and other Slovak government agents, despite their criticism, all sanction decisions against Russia, despite their criticism.
This had repeatedly criticized the right -wing populist and Prorussian Slovak national party SNS. It is the smallest partner in the government of three parties led by Fico with two considerably larger social -democratic parties.
Experts speak of “coordination breakdown”
Some observers assessed the fact that its application on Thursday at the National Council in Bratislava actually continued in Bratislava. Almost half of the members of parliament, especially from the opposition parties, had the session boycot and was therefore unintentionally against.
