Because of the Regenboogvlag – Merz: “The Bundestag is not a circus tent”

Date:

The parliament building is “no circus tent”, said the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) in connection with the Regenboog flag. He supported the decision not to increase the Rainbow flag on the German Bundestag this year (see video above).

The background is the Christopher Street Day in Berlin at the end of July, where the rights of strange people took the streets. It was recently announced that employees of the German federal government are not allowed to participate as their own group, because this violates the obligation to neutrality. The family minister then announced that it would send its own car to the event.

Now the statement by Chancellor Merz has caused further excitement and criticism of politics and associations. Queer people are “part of our society,” said the queer officer of the government, Sophie Koch (SPD). Green parliamentary group leader Britta Haßelmann said that Merz had a “talent” to “go to Fettnapf from Fettnapf and to insult people”. The rainbow flag represents a group “that is increasingly being influenced by hostility, violence and hatred”.

“Supported and criminalized for a long time”
The trade union draws the ‘fight for visibility’, the left -wing parliamentary group leader Heidi Reichinnek criticized. The lesbian and gay association accused Merz of injuring the community with his statement. “The rainbow flag is not a circus tarpaulin, but a universal symbol of diversity and human rights,” said board member Andre Lehmann. The group was “suppressed and criminalized for a long time”.

Merz said on Tuesday in the ARD show “Maischberger” that the parliament building “was not a circus tent now”, on which “the flags could be hoisted”. The decision that this year is no rainbow flag is able to lift a rainbow flag to Christopher Street Day on the German Bundestag is “equal”. The flag was already hoisted against homophobia on 17 May on the day.
