Russian President Putin invites the BRICS countries to the summit in Kazan. His country and China are pushing for an anti-Western alliance. But not everyone wants to follow Beijing and Moscow.
Nine countries are already members, but only the first five member states receive the group name BRICS: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Together with the countries Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Egypt, which joined in 2024, plus the heavily involved Saudi Arabia, they represent 35 percent of the world economy and 45 percent of the world population. By comparison, the G7 accounts for 30 percent of global economic output and only ten percent of the population.
Vladimir Putin wants to use the organization to show the world that despite the invasion of Ukraine, he is not internationally isolated. Photos from the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, should prove this today. But it’s not that simple.
