Benjamin Netanyahu has accused the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon of planning a major attack on Israel along the lines of the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. “They have planned an invasion,” the Israeli prime minister said on Wednesday.
Israel discovered a tunnel system about 100 meters behind the Lebanese border through which Hezbollah intended to attack with “all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles and rockets,” Netanyahu told French media. The dimensions of the planned attack were “greater than those of October 7,” he added. In mid-October, the Israeli head of government said that the Israeli army had found a large quantity of “state-of-the-art Russian weapons” in Hezbollah hideouts in southern Lebanon.
Rockets were fired at Israel again
Hezbollah said on Wednesday it had prevented the Israeli army from advancing into Lebanese territory through rocket and artillery fire. Israeli forces were forced to “withdraw behind the border” from the area around the southern Lebanese town of Aytaroun. The Iran-backed militia said it had also carried out further rocket attacks on Israeli soldiers in Lebanese border villages.
An air raid siren was activated in central Israel due to bullets fired from Lebanon, the Israeli army said. Four projectiles reached Israeli territory, others were repelled.
Immediately after the start of the Gaza War over a year ago, as a result of the unprecedented attack by the militant Hamas on southern Israel, Hezbollah opened a second front in Lebanon with continued rocket attacks on northern Israel. In response, Israel has shelled targets in its neighboring country.
1,500 dead in Lebanon, hundreds of thousands fleeing
The Israeli army has significantly increased airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon for several weeks and also began ground operations against Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon about three weeks ago. More than 1,500 people have been killed in Lebanon since September 23, according to a count by the AFP news agency based on official Lebanese figures. According to the UN, around 800,000 people were displaced and nearly 500,000 others fled to Syria.
Meanwhile, a Lebanese news agency reported “the heaviest attacks in Beirut since the start of the war” between Israel and Hezbollah. Six buildings were destroyed in a Beirut suburb in the most violent airstrikes to date. According to the information, a total of at least 17 airstrikes took place on Beirut’s southern suburbs on Wednesday evening, killing one person and wounding five others.
