Smart locks removed – Creative protest against mass tourism in Rome

Date:

The protest against mass tourism and the increasing number of holiday apartments is growing in Rome. Citizens who notice that too many travelers are coming to the city are resorting to increasingly unusual methods.

A video of anonymous activists circulating on the Internet who, against the spread of short-term rentals, removes so-called smart locks, that is, the key fobs for automatic check-in in holiday apartments, which can be found in many areas of the capital, a hundred meters from Circus Maximus.

Where the network lock should be was a message
Instead of the smart locks, the activists left behind a Robin Hood-style hat and a note that said: “If you are looking for the smart locks and can’t find them, read below,” it said.

“Short-term rentals take up space for families”
On the sheet of paper, the anonymous activists denounce the increase in the number of tourist apartments in Rome: “The more profitable short-term rentals are crowding out long-term rentals and taking space away from families to make way for tourists,” the report said. .

This trend is increasing as Rome prepares for the Catholic jubilee year of 2025, which will attract around 30 million pilgrims to the city. “In Rome alone there are more than 50,000 people with housing problems, more than three times the 16,000 in 2022. In the metropolitan area, 22,000 people live on the streets,” the report said.
